Personality
Ax is an Andalite arsith, a cadet in the Andalite military. He came to Earth with his brother Elfangor. On the ship, Ax was called a ‘ruffian’ by the Captain, known for his ability to get underfoot as the younger of any species tend to do. Durring the battle with the Yeerks he was not allowed to fight and was instead restricted to the Dome where, they assumed, he would come to no harm. The ship separated from the Dome to fight the Blade Ship, was destroyed, and the Dome crashed into the ocean not far from the Animorphs. They later rescued him.

Among his human friends, Ax is polite, reserved, and sometimes overly formal. He takes great pride in his species, a trait which often crosses over into being arrogant. But he is thoughtful of his friends and tries to remain diplomatic. He is genius by human standards, but still fresh out of school by Andalite standards. The other Animorphs put his superior knowledge of technology and aliens to good use, but for every time he gives an answer, there is also another time where he must apologize for not knowing, the most common excuse being that he wasn’t paying attention in class that day.

Ax, whether through military training, Andalite culture, or some personality trait of his own, keeps very rigid standards. He is loyal to his friends, his leader, and his laws. When these three do not coincide, he struggles with a great deal of internal conflict. He follows Jake as his leader, almost seeming to cling to the safety of a chain of command, and very rarely voices a contrary opinion, although he may disagree with what is being said in the group. Later in the series he feels compelled to act on his own, but still constrained by his military mindset to follow the chain of command, he compensates by acting outside of it. In other words, rather than deal with the seemingly impossible task of confronting his Prince, he ignores his Prince.

Before the death of his brother Elfangor, Ax idolized him but at the same time felt that he was living in his brother’s shadow. He was motivated throughout the series by a duty to avenge his brother’s death, but at the same time he was eager to prove himself worthy. To prove that he could be more than Elfangor’s brother, but also a warrior in his own right.

Ax often seems mature beyond his years, like the others, but his youth can be seen when he morphs human. He becomes delighted by the sense of taste, devouring anything edible he comes across, and plays with sounds like a small child playing with a favorite toy. While humorous, this trait annoys his friends and makes it difficult for them to take him out in public.

Relations –
Jake - Ax was almost obsessively loyal to Jake as his ‘Prince,’ something which made Jake uncomfortable and slightly embarrassed. Due to this, their relationship remained more professional that the others. Jake sought him out for information and advice, but not often for friendship. Ax, in turn, supported Jake and his decisions. However, late in the series, Ax started to act on his own when he thought Jake was wrong without consulting the group, something which annoyed Jake.

Rachel - Ax and Rachel are very similar, but don’t generally ‘hang out’ together. They are friends, made such by war and not by personal choice. While they agree on most issues, Ax tends to follow whatever Prince Jake says and doesn’t voice his opinions, so it doesn’t come up between them. Occasionally Ax’s superior attitude will annoy Rachel, but mostly they simply co-exist within the group.

Tobias - Ax calls Tobias his shorm, a friend trusted completely. They spend most of their time together living the same woods and Ax is generally the first person Tobias goes to when he wants to talk about something and visa-versa. They both share a feeling of alienation and loneliness, and in a sense that draws them together more than anything else and in spite of severe cultural differences.

Cassie – For most of the series, Cassie and Ax simply get along. Cassie is sympathetic to Ax’s plight, and Ax is grateful for her understanding but generally turns to Tobias for friendship and support. Mostly, the two simply co-exist in the group, as both are the type that avoid stirring up trouble. However, near the end of the series, Ax begins to resent Cassie’s morality and the hindrance it presents. This resentment is made plain after she gives the Escafil Device to Tom, but he later recants and tries to reaffirm that he doesn’t hate her.

Marco – Marco and Ax are another pair that tend to simply co-exist in the group. They are friends, but made so by circumstance more than anything else. Marco is often annoyed by Ax’s lack of knowledge about Earth pop-culture, and Ax is confused by Marco’s jokes. Like Rachel, Ax tends to agree with Marco’s assessments, but rarely says as much out loud. Marco also harbors slight suspicions about Ax, though that decreased significantly after Ax decided to open up the group, and these suspicions add to the distance between the two.
