Personality
Before becoming an Animroph Marco was a laid-back kid who spent most of his time hanging out with his best friend Jake. Although he had a sense of humor, he also had a touch of seriousness from the death of his mother two years earlier and from dealing with a father perpetually in mourning. This seriousness that kept him from being classified as the ‘class clown.’

Marco is very loyal to his friends and family. He supported his dad through his depression and is always there to back Jake up. His initial reason for joining the Animorphs was his loyalty to Jake rather than any higher-minded goal of ‘saving the planet.’ He later became more willing to fight when he found his mother was host to Visser One. At the beginning of the series he was very self-centric: our first duty is to save ourselves and our loved ones. This outlook later changed to become more like a tactician: the good of the many out-weigh the good of the few. He’s down-to-earth, logical, confident, and humorous. Even in his narratives, Marco rarely shows signs of self-doubt or inner conflict.

Marco is the tactician of the group. He’s very intelligent and good at seeing ‘the big picture’ and so most often come up with plans. He is also ruthless, completely committed to the ‘big picture,’ ‘good of the many’ way of thinking. He’s the one most conscious of group security, pointing out possible compromises to their secret. This habit often gets cries of ‘paranoia’ from fans and other characters alike.

Marco is also the group’s chief source of comic relief, always inserting a joke or witty comment in an attempt to lighten the mood. While this often means he sticks his foot in his mouth, he also has a certain talent for breaking up a tense atmosphere. He has a positive outlook on life, though it is often laced with sarcasm. His basic thought it “When something happens in life, you can either laugh at it or be sad. So you might as well laugh.” He uses humor as a defense mechanism against the pain of war and will make a witty or sarcastic comment to divert attention from serious issues about himself. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but suppressed emotion with, on rare occasions, cause trouble for him. Still, he seems to be the most well-adjusted of the Animorphs throughout the series.

Relations –
Jake – Marco and Jake were best friends from diapers and remained that way throughout the series. Marco admired Jake, but never said as much out loud. Jake respected Marco’s intelligence and his ability to see things others missed and to make plans. Marco supported Jake as the leader, but never hesitated to tell him the brutally honest truth.

Rachel – Marco and Rachel are friends who act like enemies. They tease each other in a flirtatious manner, but don’t often have a serious fight. They generally agree on moral issues, but Marco is more cautious where Rachel is reckless and this generates most of the conflict between them.

Tobias – Marco and Tobias have an uneasy friendship. They mostly get along, teasing each other and trading jokes in a good-natured way. Sometimes Marco will go too far with a joke and get on Tobias’ nerves. Marco sees Tobias as a constant reminder of what could happen for staying in a morph too long, and it scares him. Tobias knows this and is offended by it. Marco will also see Tobias’ relationship with Rachel and alternately be scared and a jealous of it. Tobias sometimes becomes jealous of Marco when he flirts with Rachel. They don’t bring these issues up, but they cause some friction in the relationship.

Cassie – Cassie and Marco have a strained relationship in the group. While socially compatible, their different stances on morals in war often lead to heated arguments. When they’re not fighting over the morality of a mission, the two seem to get along. Marco teases Cassie, and she takes it with a good-natured, tolerant attitude. Cassie often sees when Marco is struggling with an internal problem and quietly tries to help him through it. They are still not the closest of friends, preferring to turn to Rachel or Jake, respectively.

Ax – Marco and Ax are another pair that tend to simply co-exist in the group. They are friends, but made so by circumstance more than anything else. Marco is often annoyed by Ax’s lack of knowledge about Earth pop-culture, and Ax is confused by Marco’s jokes. Like Rachel, Ax tends to agree with Marco’s assessments, but rarely says as much out loud. Marco also harbors slight suspicions about Ax, though that decreased significantly after Ax decided to open up the group, and these suspicions add to the distance between the two.

**only Jake gives his age, saying that he was 13 when the war started and 16 when it ended, meaning he was in 7th or 8th grade when it stared and 10th or 11th grade at the end. Assuming that all the Animorphs were in the same grade, and depending on what grade they were in, ages could range from 12-14 at the beginning, and 15-17 at the end.
